The painter Jacques Majorelle was a key figure of orientalism. Discovering Marrakech in 1917, he was as fascinated by the city’s light and brilliant colours as by its inhabitants.
He built his own villa just outside Bad Doukkala, one of the ten open gates in the pisé ramparts sorrounding Marrakech and located in the northwest of the ancient city.
Blessed with an extraordinary, exotic garden, he would enrich it every year with unusual plant species that he brought back from his journeys into the Atlas Mountains and deeper into Africa, with the idea of exchanging plants with other botanical gardens across the world. 🎨🌴
